PS5 Reveal Event: Thoughts and Favorites

It was a long time coming, but the reveal of the PS5 console itself is out in the wild now, and along with it a whole slew of new games to look forward to. During the PlayStation event on June 11, viewers were treated to a variety of game trailers, reveals of accessories (camera, media remote, wireless headset,  controller charging station) for the PS5, along with a little deeper dive into the new DualSense controller features. While I feel like there was a lot to get excited for, I couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity. Especially regarding some of the game announcements.

The event kicked off with the announcement that an enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto V would be coming to the PS5. Look, I get it. GTA V is a crazy popular game. However, it's been around since the Xbox 360 and PS3, with versions being released on the Xbox One and PS4. Also, while I enjoy Ratchet & Clank, seeing the trailer for the new Rift Apart game for the series just left me with a kind of "been there done that" feeling. And announcements for Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Demon Souls remake, and Gran Turismo 7 only heightened that feeling for me. And of course, while not every genre of game is for everyone, the trailers for Astro's Playroom, Destruction Allstars, and Bugsnax did nothing for me.

However, amidst those feelings, the majority of the games shown during the event got me excited and anxious to jump into the worlds and adventures within them. Without a doubt, Horizon 2: Forbidden West and Resident Evil 8: Village were my top games. With other games like Godfall, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Project Athia ranking at the top as well. At the end of this article I've included the trailers for all the games that I found to be the most interesting and exciting from the event.

As mentioned at the beginning, a huge reveal during the event was finally getting to see what the PS5 actually looks like! I have to say, after months and months of rumors and guesses, I'm very pleased with how the console looks. To me, especially in comparison to the Xbox Series X, the PS5's design has a much more sleek, futuristic, and almost sci-fi appearance. Although I have to agree with some of the memes that it does kind of look like a wireless router! The image of an Alienware PC even came to mind. Personally I feel like comparing the design of the PS5 and Xbox Series X is like comparing apples to oranges. Yes, they are both very powerful gaming consoles, but the approach to their design is so different. Regardless, I like both designs and can't wait to have both of them sitting on my entertainment center this holiday season.

At the end of the day and considering all that was shown during the event, I'd have to say I was pleased overall. I think Sony did a solid job showcasing a lot of games (with gameplay) and finally giving the fans what they wanted with an official reveal of the console itself. So what games did you like, dislike, and what do you think about the design of the PS5?
