Horrifyingly Fantastic Games for Halloween
It's October. The leaves are changing, the air is cooler, and horror movies are flooding the channels of your TV. Granted, horror movies and games are watched and played all year round. But there's something special about doing so this time of the year. So I've compiled a list of some excellent horror games I think everyone will enjoy. This list is in no particular order, but each game is sure to give you a few jump scares, gasps, and plenty of intense and scary moments. Oh, and before you play some of these games, turn down the lights and make sure to bring an extra pair of underwear. You may need it.
Slender: The Arrival
This game has been out for a while now and if you haven't played it you really need to. The game takes place around the story of the Slender Man. He's tall, wears a suit, has no face, and is freaking terrifying. You play the entire game behind a camera and your only source of "protection" is a flashlight. Of course the flashlight won't completely protect you. This game gives you such a tense feeling from hearing the pounding music and heartbeat sound coupled with the fact that the Slender Man is constantly chasing you. Believe me when I say that when you see him you will immediately turn and run the other way. Your life depends on it! Slender: The Arrival is available in the Xbox Marketplace, PlayStation Store, and PC.
Until Dawn
Do you enjoy horror movies? Do you find yourself yelling at the TV when the sexy teens hide in a closet when they should be running out of the house? If so you will love Until Dawn. This game looks, sounds, and feels like you are watching and controlling a teen slasher flick. The graphics are top notch as the character animations and environment are highly detailed. The story of Until Dawn puts you in a group of friends who meet at a large mountain resort. I know, it's the perfect setting. The huge draw factor for the game is that you have to make choices that will decide who lives or dies and ultimately change the outcome of the game and provides multiple play sessions. Until Dawn is available on the PS4.
SOMA
SOMA just recently released towards the end of September and is definitely a game worth checking out. While the game doesn't have the "psycho with an axe" horror setting, it certainly offers a different take on traditional horror. SOMA takes place deep underwater in the huge station known as the PATHOS II. To me, being trapped in a station deep underwater is scary enough, but things don't stop there. Food is in short supply, radio communications are dead, some of the people on board are crazy, oh and there are strange creatures and killer robots too. This game offers puzzles, intense moments, and a dark and detailed environment that is sure to keep you on your toes. SOMA is available on the PlayStation Store and PC.
Outlast
If you have not played Outlast and enjoy horror games do yourself a favor and go buy this game right now! Outlast is without a doubt one of my favorite survival horror games because it truly brings the feeling of horror and uneasiness. You are a reporter who finds themselves tracking down the strange happenings in an abandoned insane asylum. The true survival aspect of this game comes from the fact that your character doesn't get any weapons of any kind. You have to play carefully and hide whenever possible or you will die. You view the terrifying asylum and its inhabitants through your camera which of course you will constantly be trying to conserve your battery life and find new batteries. Outlast will give you so many scares and you'll find yourself moving down every hallway with extreme caution just waiting for something to happen. Both Outlast and the DLC The Whistleblower are must owns if you enjoy horror games. Outlast is available on the Xbox Marketplace, PlayStation Store, and PC.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is another game that certainly offers horror elements, but is also a little different from traditional horror. In the game you play as a detective named Paul Prospero. You receive a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter and decide you have to try and help him. You'll spend your time in the strange town of Red Creek Valley where you find Ethan has disappeared during a murder in the town. As Paul Prospero you will use your special abilities of observation and communication with the dead to search for clues to Ethan's whereabouts and a deep sinister conspiracy. It's worth noting that this is an incredibly beautiful looking game with great storytelling, atmosphere, music, and a classic look into the world of the macabre. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is available on the PlayStation Store and PC.
Dying Light
What's Halloween without zombies? Well, you'll get plenty of zombies in this game to last you a lifetime. In Dying Light you play as an agent named Kyle Crane who is sent to infiltrate a quarantined area in the city of Harran. Of course once you get there you soon discover things are more than they seem. Dying Light offers a huge open world environment to explore and hordes of the undead to slay. Speaking of slaying the undead, you'll be able to craft and upgrade weapons, personal skills, and traverse the open world with parkour elements that actually work. If you're a fan of open world games, zombies, and killing zombies with an electrified sledge hammer with nails on it, then Dying Light is your game. Dying Light is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
