Battlefield 4: A Whole Lot of Destruction
The Battlefield series is back again and ready for action. Blazing firefights, tons of destruction, and fast paced action that is. Battlefield 4 is available on pretty much every available console, including next gen. I played Battlefield 4 on the PlayStation 4 so that is how I'm basing my review of the game. After a beta and lots of press coverage the game has been in the hands of gamers for several months now (yes I know my review is late). So is the latest Battlefield game a huge hit? Or is it just another wash, rinse, and repeat online military fps?
Now I know most people buy these games to jump right into the multiplayer and that is understandable. That is the real meat and potatoes of these kind of games. It's what keeps you coming back. However, Battlefield 4 actually does have a pretty decent campaign if you ever find yourself interested. The developers at DICE have tried creating an emotional storyline and for the most part I think they did a good job. Sure, some of the dialogue or events seem a little cliche. I still enjoyed the characters and found myself caring about what happened to them. Just like you would expect, the campaign is never short of huge firefights, explosions, and larger than life action moments that to me are always a blast seeing. While I wouldn't say the campaign is amazing, there are some cool locations and memorable moments throughout it.
Graphically the game is simply awesome looking. When looking at current gen and next gen versions of Battlefield 4 it's so easy to tell how much better the game looks on next gen. The attention to character animations and facial movements is top notch. The different environments and weapons look sharp and detailed. The lighting is superb as well. Particle effects add to the realism when things explode and the water effects on the ocean just look great. Thankfully the sharp graphics and detail transfer to the multiplayer portion of the game too. It also helps that the game just runs so buttery smooth.
So how is the multiplayer? Thankfully fans of the series will still find tons to love about Battlefield 4's multiplayer, and even new comers can feel fine with jumping aboard for the first time. The soldier classes have been tweaked some and have more customizations and gadgets to their arsenal. The weapons themselves all feel completely different and the developers have really paid attention to the detail and handling of those weapons. True to the series, the maps in Battlefield 4 are large, full of different paths, and fun to play on. Another great thing with the maps is the variety of them. You'll fight on maps with warehouses, small villages, snowy mountain sides and bunkers, downtown cities, and more. Also, now that the next gen console versions of the game support 64 player matches (32 vs 32) things are brought even on a larger scale and make for some epic moments

One of the best features of the Battlefield series has been the destructible environments. It's a simple idea that the developers at DICE have paid attention to and made sure to incorporate it into the Battlefield games. It adds that much more realism to the game. Now in Battlefield 4 the destructible environments have been cranked up to 11. In different areas on the multiplayer maps there are certain structures/objects that once destroyed actually change the landscape of the map. Take for instance the skyscraper falling down, a dam bursting and flooding the area, and more. This actually causes you and your squad to rethink your movements and how you want to get around the map. Also, having jets zip by overhead and tanks obliterate buildings make things fun and chaotic. It all keeps the action going high and your heart racing with excitement.
There are plenty of modes to the multiplayer as well. Traditional Battlefield modes like deathmatch, team deathmatch, conquest, and rush are still in full effect. There's also squad deathmatch and squad rush that are the same as the regular modes, but are focused on smaller squads instead of just two larger teams. These end up being pretty fast paced but fun. There are some new modes to the game to help spice things up. One of the new modes is Obliteration. Just like the name implies, this mode is about destruction. There are specific objectives scattered on the map that one team must destroy while the other team has to defend. Another new multiplayer mode is defuse. Defuse is a really intense mode because the two teams are much smaller and each player only has one life for that round. Once you are killed, you are out until the round is over. The round is over either when one team is wiped out or a bomb is set at a location on the map.
To me Battlefield 4 keeps what has made the series a success and adding more to it. DICE has released several updates to address the issues that plagued the multiplayer. While it is frustrating at times, the multiplayer is still fun with large maps, vehicle warfare, plenty of weapons, customization, and of course the destructible environments. Every multiplayer match is exciting and has you are on the edge of your seat. Add to that a decent single player campaign and you have another solid entry to the Battlefield series.
Final Verdict: 8.5/10
