The Wolf Among Us: Faith. Not Your Mamma's Fairytales.

Telltale is back again with another gripping "choose your own adventure" style game. The Wolf Among Us is based on the comic book series called Fables. Set in New York City, characters from the most famous fairytales are living amongst humans. Thanks to a magic ability known as glamour, the fairytale characters are able to appear like humans and blend in. Well, most of them anyway. They all live in a section of New York City and try to live their lives normally. Of course, some of the characters don't play nice and cause problems. That's where you come in.

You play as Bigby Wolf who of course is really the Big Bad Wolf. Bigby is the town's sheriff and main law enforcement. You're job, of course, is to keep the peace. Bigby is a little rough around the edges, seems to be very unhappy with his life, but he means well. In the first episode you find yourself off to settle what seems like a regular domestic disturbance. Of course things escalate from there and you are then involved with trying to solve a much larger crime. The game does a really good job making you think and act like a detective. You'll search over entire areas for clues, question people to get more information, and even catch yourself trying to look for subtle hints and body language to get answers.

Faith is just the first of five episodes in the series. Throughout the first episode you'll meet several well known fairytale characters like Toad, one of the Three Little Pigs, Snow White, and more. Each character is voiced very well and that just adds more depth to the game. You'll end up really liking or hating the characters. Graphically the game is really great looking. The colors are bright and the characters and environments all have the classic cell shaded look. All of that comes together to really create the perfect graphic novel style.
Controls work well and are simple to figure out (especially if you've never played a Telltale game). You'll move Bigby around with one thumb stick, while the other thumb stick moves the cursor around to select objects or search for clues. When you pull the cursor over a specific object or area, the buttons correspond with specific actions to take. There are several quick time events scattered throughout the story too. You'll also almost constantly be making decisions. Some you'll make quickly, but there are many choices that cause you to stop and really think about what you want to say or do. The actions and choices you make can change the story which just adds more replayability.

The only real complaint I have is that there were some moments that the frame rate stuttered and kind of took you out of the action or moment. It was nothing terrible though. Also, it's not really a complaint, but the first episode seemed to have ended too quickly. That could be because I enjoyed it so much and didn't want to stop playing! Still, the first episode can be completed in just a couple hours. Of course you can always replay the episode to try out different choices and actions to see how the story evolves differently. If you've played Telltale's Walking Dead series you'll feel right at home with The Wolf Among Us. The graphics are sharp, the dialogue is great, and the characters are very enjoyable. Then add decisions that really make you take a step back and think. The first episode starts the series off very well and just leaves you wanting more and anxious for the other episodes to release. Definitely do not let this game pass you by.

Final Verdict: 9/10
