E3 2011...let's wrap it up!

The LA Convention Center is cleared. The floors have been swept but the smell of gaming nerds and Cheetos still linger in the air. Yes that's right. E3 2011 has come and gone. If you're like me, you're still processing the flood of information that was released last week. New games were announced and demos were showcased. The three gaming giants (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) announced exclusive games, consoles, and more. My last blog I wrote about what games I was most excited about seeing. This time I'm going to be wrapping up E3 by talking about my thoughts on certain things. What did I like? What didn't quite do it for me? Well my friends, read on to find out!

First off let me talk about the three major press conferences. Let's start with Microsoft. Overall I thought their press conference was pretty generic. They showed off some cool game footage like Modern Warfare 3, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Tomb Raider, and Mass Effect 3. They did show some more footage of Gears of War 3 but I didn't get that excited. I felt like I already knew enough about the game and plus I played the multiplayer beta for a month. Then when Cliffy B had Ice T come out on stage to play the demo...I was not impressed (sorry Ice T fans). Like I figured, Microsoft talked quite a bit about Kinect and the new games and features that will be available for it. There were more mock families waving their arms and totally communicating with each other by script. The last big announcement was a short trailer for Halo 4. Not a terrible conference, but not awesome.

Next let's get to Sony's press conference. With all the problems Sony has had with hacking issues and the network being down, there was definitely the "elephant in the room" vibe going on. They made a public apology and thanked everyone for their continued support. I knew this was going to have to happen. They quickly segmented into showing off exclusive games like Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, and some games for the Move. One of their major announcements was the Playstation Vita. This is their new hand held gaming system. They talked about all of its features, price points (a $250 and $300 model), and games being released on it. Overall, I felt about the same as I did with Microsoft. It was good, but I wasn't amazed.

Lastly is Nintendo's press conference. Over the past several years I have not been impressed with Nintendo. This year's conference didn't change my feelings. Their biggest announcement was for their new console the Wii U (bad name if you ask me). They mainly talked about how the new controller would be used. It has a touch screen that allows you to interact with what's on the tv screen. If you want to, you can be watching something on tv and still play your Wii U game by using the controller like a hand held gaming system. I thought that was cool. Motion control can still be implemented with the new controller and Nintendo talked about how core games will be a part of the new hd system. Even with this news I don't see myself getting the new system. No other specs of the Wii U were announced and that just sucks. This was the least impressive conference for me.

There were tons of games shown during E3. Some of my favorites were Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Tomb Raider, Rage, Mass Effect 3, and Batman Arkham City. One game that surprised me was X-Men Destiny. I had only heard of this game but that was it. To actually see the game in action and learn about the different powers and skills you can learn and mix was really cool. My game of the show was Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by far. G4 had a two part demo of the game and I watched it several times. This game just looks amazing. They talked about how the game has 150 dungeons to explore and there's roughly 300+ hours of gameplay. One cool thing about the dragons you fight is they are not scripted. They appear when they want, move and attack at their own will, and basically do what they want. This game just has awesome sauce all over it. I know I've gushed about my love for Oblivion and Skyrim looks like it will be even better.      This year's E3 was much like ones from the past. There were some big announcements, new consoles, a few disappointments, and tons of games shown off. I always love seeing what developers have in store for us gamers in the coming months or year. Like always, I'll be looking forward to E3 2012 and all the awesome things that will be unleashed upon the video game world.
