When gamers take it too far.

Let's face it. As gamers we complain and whine about a lot. We whine that a game is too hard, people are cheating online, a boss is taking too many cheap shots, etc. I understand that if you are paying for a game you want things to be done right and the game to be worth your money. I'm not referring to glitches and game stopping bugs. Yes, those kind of things deserve to be complained about. I'm referring to the instances when gamers completely disregard all the hours, months, and years developers take to create a game, and want to have a bitch fest simply because a game didn't turn out how you felt it should.

We all know what happened when Mass Effect 3 was released and how some people completely flipped out over the ending. I'm not wanting to bring up that whole ridiculousness again, but something I read caught my attention on the matter again. Recently the founders of BioWare (Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka) left the company and the gaming industry to seek other ventures. In a recent article on IGN, an ex-developer for BioWare claims that the negativity from fans over Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic are to blame for their leaving. You can read that article here: IGN/BioWare article

Obviously we don't know if the overwhelming negativity from the fans was the sole reason for Zeschuk and Muzyka to leave BioWare. I'm sure there were other issues that lead to their decision. However, I'm sure the fans' outcry had some portion to do with it, and to me I think that's embarrassing. The fact that these two, and many others, put their hard work and passion into gaming, only to have people tear it down and be completely hateful is wrong.

This all goes back to the saying, "think before you speak." As a gamer I have had my share of disappointing games. There have been games that I thought the story was a little dull, or the ending could have been better. I completely understand that since we are paying for games that developers should make sure to correctly build a game, test it for glitches, etc. I don't think it's right for gamers to completely bash and bring out so much hatred towards developers and their game because it wasn't perfect for whatever reason. That's like asking an artist to change their painting or sculpture because you don't like the way something looks. No game is perfect. There will always be something somebody doesn't like. There's something called constructive criticism and people can be polite about it. Just remember all the work and hours that are put into games that you play before you overreact and turn into a whining douche about it.
